Ren Chenjun
His practice mainly works through performance and is presented through video, photography, and archival forms. His works focus on the condition of the individual within systems of reality, exploring how a person can continue to recognise and understand the self through endurance, repetition, self-alienation, and physical exhaustion.
Influenced by experiences of rural Chinese culture, Taoist thought, and the spirit of “death remonstration” in classical Chinese literati culture, he uses durational actions, transformed everyday objects, and bodily intervention to create connections between the body, environment, and inner perception.
Often taking place in ordinary spaces, his works involve repetitive and physically demanding forms of “manual labour” such as carrying, jumping, or enduring extreme conditions. Through these actions, he explores the relationship between labour, the body, alienation, and individual existence, while attempting to rediscover a more authentic sense of self within the pressure and absurdity of contemporary reality.
